У вёсцы Слабада 30 верасня 1931 года нарадзіўся Ніл Гілевіч -- беларускі паэт, перакладчык, літаратуравед і фалькларыст. Ён быў студэнтам Мінскага педагагічнага вучылішча (1947-1951), студэнтам філалагічнага факультэта Белдзяржуніверсітэта (1951-1956) і аспірантам (1956-1959). Публікавацца пачаў у 1946 годзе. Ён быў выкладчыкам і прафесарам кафедры беларускай літаратуры Белдзяржуніверсітэта (1960-1986), першым сакратаром Саюза пісьменнікаў БССР (1980-1989), старшынёй Фонду славянскай пісьменнасці і славянскіх культур, дэпутатам Вярхоўнага Савета БССР (1985-1990), дэпутатам і старшынёй Пастаяннай камісіі Вярхоўнага Савета Беларусі па адукацыі, культуры і захаванню гістарычнай спадчыны (1990-1995), старшынёй Таварыства беларускай мовы.
